Is Psychotherapy For Me?
People can be suffering from problems that cause worries, anxieties and sadness without really knowing how to deal with such difficulties. Scientifically based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy offer straight forward ways of effectively dealing with these challenges.
If you are noticing that your life is getting more and more dominated by anxiety or depression and can't seem to find an answer on how to deal with life's difficulties then therapy may be right for you. You will be exploring your problems whilst learning effective and pragmatic ways to deal with life's challenges. Everything we talk about is very straight forward and an emphasis will be on making practical use of any insights you gain. We will look at which elements of CBT will be helpful for yourself in order to keep things simple and productive. You will learn what keeps your difficulties going and following that, we will explore things for you to practice outside of the therapy sessions in order to enable beneficial change. Everything we do is underpinned by scientific principles and many people usually notice a significant alleviation of their problems after about the fourth session. Before engaging in therapy, an introductory phone call will assess whether my style of Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy is a good fit for yourself. Feel free to get in touch by clicking here. |
Things to Consider when doing in person therapy in Richmond or online
Sometimes people can experience shame about opening up. There are many reasons for this. The problem with not opening up is that excessive secrecy can maintain an invisible wall which makes it hard to connect with those around you. In therapy you will encounter an environment in which you can talk about what's going on. Talking about things will help you understand your difficulties and this will provide the foundation to be able to make use of techniques from different styles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
We will initially form an idea of what your difficulties are, how they are maintained and what you can do in order to improve things. This means that you will understand which circumstances within yourself and your environment improve and worsen your problems in the long- and short term (hypotheses formation). Therapy is therefore tailored towards yourself by forming these kind of ideas.
We will then think about techniques for you to practice, which will be tested by you trying things out in-between sessions. If things improve, then we will continue with our initial understanding of your difficulties and if not, create new problem hypotheses until we have found an approach that works.
